Over the range models load up with grease

An over the range microwave also extracts over your hob, and its grease filter loads fast in a kitchen cooking daily. A unit humming louder than it used to, or running hot, is often fighting a blocked filter rather than failing. That is a clean, not a repair.

Where we fall short

This is the one appliance where we regularly advise against the repair. A magnetron can cost more than a new countertop machine, and a cavity damaged by arcing cannot be made safe at any price. We will say so. It is also not one to open at home, because the capacitor holds its charge long after the plug is out.

Depends on the part. Door switches, a turntable motor or a waveguide cover are cheap and worth doing. A magnetron on a budget countertop model usually is not.

Most often the waveguide cover on the cavity wall. Stop using it at the first spark, because carrying on burns the wall behind it.
